Management
Alginate Reflux Suppressants
Reflux suppressants are currently prescribed for heartburn, reflux oesophagitis, hiatus hernia and dyspepsia in adults, and for gastric reflux and regurgitation in infants. Gaviscon Advance Aniseed suspension is now also licensed for use in management of symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux such as hoarseness and other voice disorders, sore throats and cough, and is the only alginate reflux suppressant to have this indication.
More on the mode of action of reflux suppressants
Morice suggests that therapy with alginates may be effective in GORD-related cough.[Morice AH, 2002]
A study by McGlashan et al demonstrated that compared with control, Gaviscon Advance significantly improved both symptom scores and clinical findings in patients with LPR.
In some cases, acid suppression may not be sufficient, as the enzymes present in the refluxate may still cause damage. The prevention of movement of all the gastric contents into the oesophagus with reflux suppressants may prevent all damage.
